MDP-ESA will make a presentation at the World Urban Forum 4 in Nanjin, China on Monday November 3, 2008 at 16:30 to 18: 30pm in room MR209. All interested experts and practitioners from Africa, The America, Asia, and Europe are invited to share their experiences of PB practice with other Networks. This event is being promoted by MDP-ESA and CIGU in partnership with the World Bank Group. The working title is “Balanced Resources for Balanced Development: New Tools and Questions about Participatory Budgeting.” The event will be organized with the following objectives in mind:
- To expand global awareness about the benefits and impacts of Participatory Budgets as instruments of local development
- To promote innovative initiatives and tools which have been developed recently and disseminate their use among the participants of the World Urban Forum;
- To discuss the challenges and future trends in Participatory Budgeting in the global context.
This event offers an opportunity to hear directly from pioneers, experts, and promoters of participatory budgeting World Urban Forum, held by the UN-HABITAT every two years, is the summit forum of urban development in the world and top conference concerning human habitation. The Forum is concerned with such issues as energy, environment, land, housing, infrastructure, healthcare, education, safety and reform of ghettos, which are pressing issues that deserve the participation of national and local governments, NGOs, experts and scholars, entrepreneurs, citizens and organizations from all walks of life. The reports and resolutions are submitted to government agencies to form guidelines for future development for human society. The theme for 2008 WUF is “Harmonious Urbanization” and is expected to come up with policy recommendations on issues ranging from environmentally sustainable urban economic growth and social equity to the preservation of historic neighbourhoods.
